Research centers on nonlinear physics, condensed matter, and fluid dynamics. He has done extensive studies of pattern formation, nonlinear and chaotic dynamics, and mixing in systems such as: hydrodynamic waves, granular materials, convecting and rotating fluids, film flows, and two-dimensional stratified fluids. He has written a textbook in nonlinear dynamics, and has co-chaired an NRC study of advanced secondary science and mathematics education.
