Research in the group aims to elucidate the mechanisms of organic chemical reactions by the structural characterization of transition states and reactive intermediates. Of special recent interest to us are the so-called non-Kekule compounds. We have isolated several of these extremely unstable species, whose properties are significant not only for the study of mechanism but also for the design of potential organic ferromagnets, electrical conductors, and other nanoscale devices. In recent years, I have been working and writing on the history and epistemology of chemistry.
