I study threats and impacts of human activities on the planet and the ecology and evolution of tropical ocean ecosystems. Most of my work today is focused on the historical ecology and conservation of ocean ecosystems, particularly in the tropics. I am also interested in the ecological and human consequences of sea level rise and the environmental impacts of industrial agriculture. My two most recent books are:   Breakpoint: Reckoning With America’s Environmental Crises. Yale University Press and  Shifting Baselines in Fisheries: Using the Past to Manage the Future. Island Press.
