Expert in international law and constitutional law.  Author, among other works, of The Slave Trade and the Origins of International Human Rights Law (Oxford, 2012), offering a novel interpretation of the origins of human rights law; origins traced, not to post-WWII developments, but to 19th Century abolitionist movement against the slave trade.  Experienced litigator in areas of specialty, including counsel of record in US Supreme Court and US appellate courts.  Also an accomplished teacher and academic leader, having led major initiatives in hiring, curriculum reform, and diversity and inclusion before being named Stanford Law’s 14th Dean in 2019.
