Jennifer Hornsby is a leading figure in three areas of our discipline: in philosophy of mind and agency, where her engaged naïve naturalism offers a major challenge to a widely accepted physicalist orthodoxy; in philosophy of language, where her vision of communicative speech acts has underlined their social character; and in feminist philosophy, where her work on the silencing of certain speech acts, has shed light on our understanding of linguistic forms of oppression. This latter work has opened up newly fertile areas of philosophy, which bridge disciplinary boundaries, and examine normative dimensions to speech, derogatory speech, sexual communication, and the social and institutional requirements of free speech.
