Jeffrey J. Henderson
Professor Jeffrey Henderson is the William Goodwin Aurelio Professor of Greek Language and Literature at Boston University. His focus is on Greek literature, especially drama; interactions of literature, especially poetry, with politics and society; and textual criticism. The Maculate Muse (1975, 1991) inaugurated the study of ancient Greek sexuality in its modern form and brought the interpretation of Aristophanes to a new level. He also published an edition, with commentary, of Aristophanes' Lysistrata (1990). Henderson serves as general editor of the Loeb Classical Library, the international premier series of texts and translations of Greek and Latin authors (with more than 530 volumes, all in both digital and print form); as editor, he is responsible for deciding on work to be updated or newly commissioned, and for ensuring the publication's high standard of philology. He helped establish the Loeb Classical Library Foundation Fellowships, which assist classical scholars internationally. Henderson is the recipient of the American Philological Association's Goodwin Award of Merit for best book of the year for translations of Aristophanes comedies. Additionally, he is the former dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at Boston University and former President of the Society for Classical Studies.
