Vaupel was a Founding and Executive Director. He contributed to both human demography and population biology by developing a theory accounting for the effects of heterogeneity within populations, and studying the social, biological, and evolutionary determinants of longevity and aging. He also founded the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in 1996, and wrote many articles and several books about demography and aging.
