Artist and architect. His installations are the physical presence of light made manifest in sensory form. Avid pilot who has logged over twelve thousand hours flying, Turrell considers the sky as his studio, material and canvas. Has shown in many renowned museums, but also creates public works, including skyscapes and crater pieces. In the gallery, he works with there dimensional elements of light, the camera obscura, and performance. Has also designed lighting for buildings and has constructed 'perceptual shells'. Recipient of Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellowships.
