Research and teaching centers on late 19th and 20th century United States history. He has published books on politics during the New Deal era, on cultural attitudes in the USA concerning cancer, and on attitutdes in the USA towards poverty. He has written a biography of Senator Robert A Taft of Ohio, an interpretive history of the United States, 1945-1974, and a history of the legacy of Brown v. Board of Education (1954).
