Downing is recognized for his work on the molecular pathology of pediatric leukemia and the application of this information to increase the number of children cured. In 2010, he launched the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project, the world's largest effort devoted to defining the genetic lesions that underlie childhood cancers. This project produced insights that seek to change understanding of a variety of tumors. As the scientific director, and now the chief executive officer of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Downing hopes to establish the global agenda for advancing cures for children with catastrophic diseases.
