For discovery of regulatory networks that control T cell responses and the novel concept of unleashing the immune response to treat cancer by turning off an inhibitory pathway with an antibody (anti CTLA-4), which created a new field termed immune checkpoint therapy that drove the clinical development of other antibodies (anti-PD-1, anti-PD-L1) and provided successful treatments that have led to thousands of patient's lives saved with thousands more being saved each year.
