Professor James M. McPherson is the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History, Emeritus at Princeton University. He is a leading historian of the American Civil War and Reconstruction. The Negro's Civil War (1965) was one of the first books to bring to voice African-American participants in the war. The Pulitzer-prize winner The Battle Cry of Freedom (1988) remains the standard book in the field. Professor McPherson was the president of the American Historical Association in 2003, and is a member of the editorial board of Encyclopaedia Britannica
