James J. Gross is the Ernest R. Hilgard Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, where he directs the Stanford Psychophysiology Laboratory. 

Gross earned his BA in philosophy from Yale University and his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.

Gross's research focuses on emotion and emotion regulation. He has an extensive program of investigator-initiated research, and has received grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Institute of Education Sciences. He has over 500 publications and two honorary doctorates.

Gross has won numerous awards for his teaching and mentoring, including the Dean’s Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize, the Stanford Postdoctoral Mentoring Award, the Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Society for Affective Science’s Mentoring Award.
