Woodward works primarily in philosophy of science, with a particular emphasis on issues having to do with causal and explanatory reasoning. His 2003 book, Making Things Happen: A Theory of Causal Explanation, which won the 2005 Lakatos award, develops an interventionist account of causation, according to which causal claims can be understood as claims about the results of hypothetical experiments.  Woodward is also interested in the bearing of empirical studies of moral decision-making on issues in normative ethics and political philosophy. He was President of the Philosophy of Science Association from 2010-12.
