In August 2018 Ryan began his term as president of the university. He has a national reputation in the areas of law and education, having authored a study of the effects of racial segregation on two school systems in Richmond, Virginia, Five Miles Away, A World Apart (2010), a text on the legal dimensions of education, Educational Policy and the Law (2011), and numerous articles in law journals on issues in education law. His book, Wait, What? And Life's Other Essential Questions (2017), based on a Harvard University commencement speech, became a national best seller.
