Geballe Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences and Professor of Political Science.  Research focus on the causes of armed conflict, including interstate war, civil war, and ethnic violence.    Has also published on democracy and foreign policy, democratic transitions and sustainability, and post-conflict reconstruction.  Member of the National Academy of Sciences.  Awarded Dean’s Award for Distinguished Teaching in the School of Humanities and Sciences in the area of Excellence in Graduate Education, Stanford University, Karl Deutsch Award from the International Studies Association, Heinz Eulau Award for best article, and Gregory Luebbert Award for best article published in Comparative Politics.
