A historian by training, Clifford has had an enormous impact, not only in history and anthropology but in the humanities at large. A theorist and practitioner of ethnographic history, books include The Predicament of Culture: Twentieth Century Ethnography, Literature and Art (1988), Routes: Travel and Translation in the Late Twentieth Century (1997), and the edited volume with George Marcus, Writing Culture: The Poetics and Politics of Ethnography (1986). Widely translated, always challenging, sometimes controversial, Clifford has changed the way scholars look at their own and other cultures.
