James VanderKam is John A. O'Brien Professor of Hebrew Scriptures, Emeritus at University of Notre Dame. VanderKam’s areas of interest are the history and literature of Early Judaism and the Hebrew Scriptures. His research and writing is focused on the Dead Sea Scrolls and related literature.

A member of the editorial committee that prepared the scrolls for publication, VanderKam is the editor of thirteen volumes in the official series Discoveries in the Judaean Desert. He is an editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls. His other works include Dead Sea Scrolls TodayFrom Revelation to Canon: Studies in the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple LiteratureFrom Joshua to Caiaphas: High Priests after the Exile; and The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bible, among others. Vanderkam served as general editor of the Journal of Biblical Literature and on the Council of the Society of Biblical Literature.

He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and was previously on the faculty at North Carolina State University.
