Professor of Mathematics, Chair of Mathematics. Contributed to the theory of nonlinear evolutionary partial differential equations. One of the first to use methods from geometry and dynamical systems theory to study properties of solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations. Results range from the global existence and well-posedness of solutions, through stability, to long-time behavior such as that which arises from homoclinic orbits. Rigorously established Poincare's normal forms for partial differential equations. Most recently obtained results on the global solution of gravity water waves.
