Authored or co-authored more than 30 books on the economic history of Europe and is the foremost interpreter of long and short-term economic structural changes in Eastern and Central Europe. Former president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1985-90) and elected member of six European academies, has often advised the Hungarian government and the U.S. State Department of economic policy-making. Served as president of the Hungarian Historical Association (1975-82) and of the International Committee of Historical Sciences (1995-2000). Lectured internationally for four decades. Since 1990 has taught at UCLA and directed the Center for European and Eurasian Studies (1993-2005). Recent works include Economic History of Twentieth-Century Europe: Economic Regimes from Laissez-faire to Globalization (2006), and Economic History of Nineteenth-Century Europe: Diversity and Industrialization (2013).
