Taught at the Bread Loaf School of English, Harvard, and Princeton. Most recent book, Victorian Glassworlds. Glass Culture and the Imagination 1830-1880 (2008) won the Modern Language Association's James Russell Lowell Prize. Scholar and critic of nineteenth-century poetry, literary theory and women's writing; her work seeks to change the way nineteenth-century poetry is read, by restoring women's poetry to its prominent place and by attending to the importance of print culture, making the periodical a structural part of research. At Birkbeck College, helped establish the first cross-Faculty Master's degree program in Gender, Society and Culture, which has the unique feature of leading to either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree. Founded and remains editor of, Women: A Cultural Review. Published poet. Recipient of an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Leicester. Fellow of the British Academy.
