Ingrid Monson is a jazz scholar and ethnomusicologist known internationally for her work about the relationships among music, race, aesthetics, and politics. She is the author of major books and articles on jazz improvisation and the African American musical tradition, as well as the symbiotic relationship of music and civil rights in the United States and abroad. Currently completing a book on a virtuoso Malian musician, she is also researching the history of copyright and economic inequality in African American music. Co-editor of an issue of Daedalus.
