I. Bernard Weinstein

Frode Jensen Professor of Medicine, Professor of Genetics and Development, Professor of Public Health, Columbia University. Research focuses on molecular mechanisms of action of environmental agents during the multistage process of cacinogenesis. He elucidated how carcinogens modify the structure of DNA thus causing mutations and demonstrated the role of protein kinase C in tumour promotion and cell transformation. He discovered abnormalities in cell cycle control proteins in cancer cells. He is a founder of the field of molecular epidemiology, a powerful new approach to cancer causation and prevention.
