Yoshikawa has completed detailed descriptive studies of family and group care settings and of the development of children of immigrants, as well as large experimental studies of early childhood interventions in the U.S. and in low- and middle-income countries. His work has influenced policy discussions in the U.S. (e.g., the Obama Administration's national expansion of preschool education; improvement of Head Start in areas of family support and mental health; and the increase in the Child Care Development Block Grant) and internationally (inclusion of goals for childhood development beyond infant and maternal survival in the U.N. 2015-2030 Sustainable Development Goals).
