Herbert Jäckle pioneered the genetic analysis of early embryogenesis, discovering key regulatory genes and pathways. Our understanding of embryonal segmentation, pattern formation and morphogenesis has been largely shaped by the transformative insights generated by Jäckle. The mechanisms he uncovered in Drosophila have been faithfully conserved throughout evolution. His current work focuses on energy homeostasis, defining genetic pathways that contribute to obesity. Jäckle is emeritus professor at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry. He continues his research activities at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel.
