Authority on antitrust law, author of Antitrust Law, a monumental 18 volume work. His book, Enterprise and American Law, 1860-1880 (1991), a groundbreaking study of the social, political, and intellectual roots of American capitalism, received the Littleton-Griswold Prize of the American Historical Association in 1991. Latest books are The Opening of American Law: Neoclassical Legal Thought, 1870-1970; and The Antitrust Enterprise: Principle and Education (2006).
