Main research interest is structure and function of metal-enzymes and proteins. Helmut Beinert was decisively involved in discovery of iron-sulfur (Fe-S) proteins and introduction of EPR spectroscopy into enzyme chemistry. Worked on Cu-proteins (cytochrome oxidase); main focus now is on Fe-S proteins and their multiple uses in living matter, as electron transfer agents, catalytic centers and in sensing and regulatory functions. Helmut Beinert collaborates with microbiologists, cell biologists, and physicists (spectroscopists) on these aspects.
