Helen M. Berman

Helen Berman has served as Director of the RCSB Protein Data Bank (PDB) from 1998-2014 and Director-Emerita of the PDB from 2015. She also serves in leadership roles for the Nucleic Acid Database and the EMDataBank. Her passion for making structural information accessible to and understandable by broad communities has driven the development of the PDB into an indispensable international resource for biology. She is a visionary who championed open access to structural information already in the early 1970s (at which time almost no-one else did), and she is a doer who transformed this vision into reality.
