
Heinrich von Staden
Professor Heinrich von Staden is the Professor Emeritus of Classics and History of Science at the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study. He is a scholar of ancient science and philosophy, ancient medicine, and history of science. He wrote Herophilus: The Art of Medicine in Early Alexandria (1989), which was awarded the Charles Goodwin Award of Merit, American Philological Association; and William H. Welch Medal, American Association for the History of Medicine), examining the Hellenistic period and the history of Greek intellectual discourse. His current projects include an edition with full commentary of Erasistratus (companion volume to Herophilus) and a book-length study of animals in ancient science and medicine. He is a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Institut de France; Akademie der Wissenschaften, Göttingen, American Philosophical Society, British Academy, and Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters.
