His research and publications has centered on aspects of intellectual history from c. 1550 to c. 1900, with chief attention to changing conceptions of the nature of language in relation to culture, society, and philosophy. He has written on Leibniz; on Locke's political philosophy and on his influence; and Descartes and religion; on important members of the early Royal Society; and especially focused on Condillac and his place in eighteenth-century thought. Present work includes a translation and edition of Condillac's essay on the origin of language and knowledge.
