Professor Halil Inalcik was a Professor of History and Founder of the History Department at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. Additionally, Professor Inalcik served as a professor for Ottoman Studies at the University of Chicago. Inalcik's research was critical in elevating the Ottoman period to a leading role in the study of world history. His scholarly work was marked by rigorous research of source materials, and his writings, including The Ottoman EmpireThe Classical Age 1300-1600, became critical texts for historians around the world. He was a member of the Turkish History Institute (TTK), Royal Asiatic Society, Atatürk Culture, Language and History Supreme Institution, Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA), Eurasian Academy, and Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Additionally, Professor Inalchik received numerous awards such as the Meritorious Service Medal, Hungarian Order of Merit, and TÜRKSOY Honour Medal. Professor Inalchik unfortunately passed away in July of 2016.
