Peyton Young has made fundamental contributions to social choice theory and cooperative game theory, with particularly influential work on theories of fair distribution and cost allocation. He is also one of the pioneers of evolutionary game theory. His study of learning dynamics subject to rare perturbations gave rise to the concept of stochastic stability, which has become a basic solution concept in the field. His research spans both theory and empirical applications, including most notably the evolution of social norms and institutions.
