Bush was a leading proponent of the view that species can arise from other species in situ, that is, sympatrically. Although sympatric speciation was long denied, he and his students presented exhaustively detailed empirical demonstrations, performed critical experiments, and contributed to the theory of species formation. His discoveries provided a better understanding of the origin and maintenance of species diversity. He studied speciation and coevolution between endemic Galpagos insects and plants.
