Gregory Murphy’s work has focused on concepts and concept learning related to word meaning and language comprehension. Many theories of concept learning assume that properties are automatically associated with the concept but his research reveals how domain knowledge affects prior knowledge and inference. Murphy is also an effective synthesizer and his book on concepts and theoretical review papers and theoretical review papers have been highly influential. A further goal of his research has been to forge a link between the psychology of concepts and psycholinguistic theories of language use.
