Graham F. Hatfull
Hatfull is an international leader in bacteriophage genetics and evolution. His investigations show that phage genomes are mosaics, related by dynamic horizontal gene transfer throughout the biosphere. His studies of Mycobacteria have resulted in a phage toolbox for tuberculosis genetics. He uncovered biochemical mechanisms of phage integration. Hatfull is the founder and scientific director of the SEA-PHAGES program, encompassing more than 100 institutions that now introduce 5,000 undergraduates to scientific research discovery each year. His laboratory and program team developed the phages for the first successful treatment of a human patient with genetically engineered bacteriophage for an antibiotic-resistant infection.
