Gopinath has made fundamental contributions to the understanding of sovereign debt defaults, a crucial issue both for emerging markets and for the recent crisis of the Eurozone. Her work has documented important differences between the business cycles of emerging market economies and those of advanced economies, and proposed ways to adapt macroeconomic theory to be more relevant to the former group of countries. She has also done fundamental work on the effects of exchange-rate movements on the pricing of internationally traded goods, a central issue for understanding the effects of global conditions on individual economies.
