Higgins Professor of Chemistry. Developed infrared laser methods to map precisely the flow of energy within the vibrational modes of molecules and determined the detailed mechanism for collisional quenching of unimolecular reactions using super high resolution diode laser probes. Investigated the properties of molecular adsorbates at the liquid-solid interface with scanning tunneling microscopy. Has been able to locate chemical functional groups for molecules adsorbed on surfaces and to determine the absolute chirality for optically active molecules physisorbed on surfaces.
