An ecologist with a specialty in botany. Founder, former president and director of the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Former chairman of the board of the World Wildlife Fund and former president of the Ecological Society of America. Author of more than 300 research papers on ecology and editor of several books on human interactions with the environment, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the recipient of the 1996 Heinz Environment Prize.
