His scholarly interests have focused centrally on the structure and rhetoric of poetic drama -- most commonly that of the European Renaissance, and most specifically that of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. I have sought to show how these literary elements have been used to articulate the dialectic between the individual's present experience and the social values inherent in the language of the past, most often that of classical antiquity.
