Professor of Astronomy. Astronomer who developed a method of precise Doppler measurements and used the world's largest telescope, Keck, to detect more than 120 of the 200+ currently known extrasolar planets, with the goal of characterizing their properties, understanding their origin, and allowing study of their masses, radii, and orbits. Also discovered the first multiple planet system, the first Saturn-sized planet, and the most Earth-like planet yet found. Awarded the Henry Draper Medal of the National Academy of Science (2001), the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement (2003), and the Shaw Prize (2005).
