Research has focused on the isotopic dating of significant events on the Earth and in the Solar System. With colleagues, he determined the time-scale of Pleistocene geomagnetic reversals, which led directly to the theory of Plate Tectonics. His dating of volcanoes in the Hawaiian-Emperor chain of islands and seamounts proved that the volcanic chain was formed by movement of the Pacific plate over a fixed melting spot in Earth's mantle. He has written the definitive book on the age of Earth. Current research involves determining the timing of lunar impact basin formation.
