The research centers on geophysical fluid dynamics. He has solved problems of upper bounds on transports in turbulent fluid systems. Through his theoretical and experimental investigations of pattern formation and transitions to turbulence in convection layers heated from below he has become a leading authority of this field. Present research focuses on the dynamics of rotating fluids and the dynamo problem of the generation of planetary magnetic fields.
