He began his career as a mathematician but early on turned to the exciting new developments in physics, particularly the theory of quantized fields, and wrote two papers on the foundations of quantum electrodynamics which have had a profound and lasting influence on many branches of modern theoretical physics. He went on to solid-state physics, nuclear engineering, rocket technology, climate studies, and astrophysics. Beyond his talents and passions in physics, he has a keen awareness of the human side of science and of the scientific/technological side of human activities. His books include Disturbing the Universe, Weapons and Hope, and Infinite in All Directions.
