My background is in literary history and criticism, with emphasis on American and modern British literature. However, I have written broadly about cultural issues. For a long while my most intensive interest has been in Freud and psychoanalysis--first as a critic of questionable premises, and more recently as a skeptical student of Freud's life and work in the nineteenth century. I have criticized empirically unsupported psychological theories, especially surrounding the topic of memory, and have warned against their warping effect on criminal justice.
