Regents Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. Shaped field of polymer physical science, with a focus on the thermodynamics and dynamics of block copolymers, polymer solutions and blends. Contributions to polymer science and engineering through the implementation of precise synthetic polymerization methods and a range of complementary physical characterization tools, especially neutron  and x-ray scattering, rheological measurements, and mechanical property evaluation. Awards include the Dillon Medal (1989), Polymer Physics Prize (1997, American Physical Society), and Cozzarelli Prize (2015, PNAS). Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Member of the National Academy of Engineering (elected in 2002).
