Prominent leader in biomolecular engineering, whose innovations have led to improved processes for renewable fuels and chemicals and sustainable routes to making drugs and other products. Pioneered directed evolution approaches to engineering enzyme catalysts. Member of all three U.S. National Academies (Science, Medical and Engineering). Awarded the 2011 Charles Stark Draper Prize of the National Academy of Engineering, the 2011 National Medal of Technology & Innovation, and the 2013 Eni Prize in Renewable Energy. Co-founder of Gevo, Inc. (renewable fuels and chemicals) and Provivi, Inc.(innovative, non-toxic crop protection strategies).
