Craik is best known for his levels-of-processing approach to human learning and memory, which led to processing theories by others. He published (with others) many papers focusing on memory research within the field of levels of processing in the 1970s. His other primary contribution has been to the study of how age affects remembering, a topic on which he continues to publish. More recently, his contributions concern neural bases of remembering using brain imaging techniques and the study of how speaking multiple languages affects cognitive performance. In 2000, Craik won the Killam Prize for Science from the Canada Council for the Arts.
