As a graduate student, Feng Zhang made major contributions to the development of optogenetics and its application to understanding functional neural circuitry. As a faculty member, he has developed technologies for precision genome and transcriptome engineering in eukaryotic cells using TALEs and CRISPR-Cas9, Cas12, and Cas13 systems and made fundamental discoveries about the biology of these systems. This work has revolutionized molecular biology by dramatically enhancing our ability to make targeted changes in the genome of virtually any organism. It is already enabling a broad range of biological and medical research, and it promises the development of novel therapies for thousands of genetic diseases.
