Research has focused on modern East Asia since World War II, particularly the social structure of Japan and CHina. He studied the urban Japanese family and in the 1970s wrote about Japanese success that challenged the West. He investigated Guangdong Province which became the leading edge for Chinese reform and opening after 1978. He also followed the industrialization of South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. He is currently studying the Deng Xiaoping era (1978-1994), the impact of globalization on Japan, and the China-Japan-U.S. triangle.
