Nogales is one of the leaders of the revolution currently taking place in structural biology. Her contributions to the development of electron microscopy as a tool in structural biology started with the solution of the structure of alpha and beta tubulin. These structures allowed her to investigate microtubule ultrastructure and the nucleotide-dependent conformational changes that underlie their complex dynamics. Her breakthroughs in the high-resolution structural characterization of the 26S proteasome, the CRISPR-associated complex for antiviral defense in bacteria (Cascade), and the human transcription preinitiation complex, are just a few of her impressive scientific achievements.
